Prominent Project Paints Street Art In Positive Light

YOUNG people are using a combination of aerosol and traditional art to give the run-down S&W Miller corner site in Newcastle West a bright new face.

The project, at the busy Stewart Ave/Hunter St intersection, has been organised by the Palais Royale Youth Venue.

It is so far the most prominent position in Newcastle to feature legal aerosol or graffiti-style art.

Painters at the site yesterday reported an enthusiastic public response to their efforts.

One passerby had even told them that the corner's new face made his trip to work worthwhile.

The Newcastle City Council approved project will be finished next week. It will last for between three and six months, when the site will be redeveloped as a three-storey residential and commercial complex costing about $3million.

The painters seemed unconcerned that only about 10% of the art would be saved.

They were more interested in having legal aerosol painting accepted as an art form.

Among painters on the Newcastle West site are members of the Urban Artists Federation which was formed at the Palais Royale Youth Venue about 18 months ago to find legal work.
