FACE PAINTING WITH BILL LEAK

Monday 8pm, ABC1

A nice addition to the ABC's "educational misdirect" ouvre: the programming that teaches you something while you're looking the other way. Here, the very personable Bill Leak - who as well as being a fine cartoonist is an equally accomplished painter - chooses a famous deceased Aussie every week, investigates the personality, and then paints the portrait. Part contemporary history, part biography, part art lesson - sprinkled with anecdotes from Leak's own life and career - it's an eclectic and entertaining hotchpotch. Tonight's subject is another painter, Pro Hart: a strange, solitary, irascible fellow whom Leak gradually brings to life.
